Find out more about Multi-Engine Ratings

For pilots who have been licensed with an aircraft, obtaining a multi-engine rating is an add-on certification that gives them the ability to operate aircraft that have more than one engine. Since most major regional and national airlines operate multi-engine aircraft, it is imperative that anyone aspiring to become a professional airline pilot has this rating.
How Does a Multi-Engine Rating Provide Pilots with Different Privileges?
There is a great deal of skill, practice, and commitment involved in learning how to fly an aircraft with a single engine. Most pilots begin their training in a single-engine aircraft during their first flight course. As far as aviation schools are concerned, single-engine airplanes are frequently used for the training of students for their private pilot certificates as well as their commercial certificates (and sometimes even certification as a flight instructor). You may decide to take your career to the next level once you are comfortable with your proficiency as a pilot in a single-engine aircraft and add a multi-engine rating to your existing pilot certificate once you have gained some expertise in flying a single-engine aircraft.
What is the process of earning a multi-engine rating?
When it comes to flying a multi-engine airplane, there are a number of things that need to be understood, such as the differences in systems, performance, and aerodynamics between operating an aircraft with a single engine, and one that has multiple engines. To gain a multi-engine rating, you need to be trained in specific multi-engine techniques in every phase of your flight – from start-up to landing – in order to obtain your rating. As a result, all phases of flight differ in their own way, as do many procedures.
You are required to train for at least three hours in a multiengine airplane before you are able to take the checkride. This is, even if you do not have to log any specific total number of hours in a multi-engine airplane. Besides learning about emergency procedures, performance, flight maneuvers, and the airplane’s limitations, you will also learn about the limitations of the airplane. It is necessary to obtain an endorsement from an authorized instructor before you can take a check ride for your multi-engine rating.
